About Dr. Joe

From his early days as a medical student, Dr. Joe has built a solid foundation through extensive exposure to the Malaysian healthcare system at various levels. During his pre-clinical years, he completed clinical attachments at Klinik Kesihatan Sri Kembangan and the Emergency Department of Selayang Hospital. His clinical years were spent in Terengganu, where he undertook an elective posting at Kuala Terengganu Specialist Centre, followed by six weeks at a private physician clinic.

Dr. Joe’s passion for orthopedics became evident during his time as a medical officer and Master’s student, where he actively participated in numerous workshops and training programmes including the Orthopedic Trauma Course (OTC), AO Basic & Pediatric Courses, and the Malaysia Trauma Life Support (MTLS), where he was recognised as a Potential Trainer for the circulation and fracture immobilization station.

In 2013, Dr. Joe had the unique opportunity to assist in a live XLIF (Extreme Lateral Interbody Fusion) surgery in Kuching during the Asia Pacific Orthopedic Association (APOA) Meeting, under the guidance of a renowned spine surgeon. That same year, he contributed to international community healthcare through volunteer work at the Graphic Health Center in Cambodia, which offered him eye-opening insight into the disparities in healthcare systems across Southeast Asia.

In 2014, Dr. Joe presented his first international oral presentation titled “Lateral Approach Surgery in Lumbar Degenerative Spine Disease – Size Does Matter” at the Annual London Spine Course in England. That same year, he was honoured with the Anugerah Perkhidmatan Cemerlang (Excellent Service Award) by Malaysia’s Ministry of Health.

Dr. Joe enrolled in the Master of Orthopedic Surgery programme at University of Malaya (2015/2016 batch) and successfully completed it in 2019. He also obtained certification as a Certified Medical Impairment Assessor (CMIA) through SOCSO in 2015.

Between 2016 and 2019, he presented several scientific posters at the Malaysia Orthopedic Association (MOA) Annual Scientific Meetings, covering complex topics such as:

  • Dupuytren disease misdiagnosed as multiple ganglions

  • Bilateral undisplaced scaphoid fractures

  • Halo-pelvic traction for severe scoliosis

  • Synovial chondromatosis post intra-articular injection

In 2018, Dr. Joe completed the Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) course and was a finalist for the Mahmood Merican Best Orthopedic Master Thesis Award (2019) with a randomized controlled trial on Gabapentin's effectiveness in post-operative musculoskeletal oncology patients.

In his role as an educator and leader, Dr. Joe organized the Hilir Perak Basic Orthopedic Trauma Course in 2020 and supervised multiple poster presentations at MOA 2021, APOA 2021, and the Post-Operative Mortality Review Conference 2022, covering a diverse range of orthopedic cases and innovations.

He completed an arthroplasty fellowship at Sun Medical Hospital, South Korea, in 2023. Currently, Dr. Joe serves as the Lead Clinician for the Fracture Liaison Service (FLS) at Sungai Long Specialist Hospital. Under his leadership, the FLS was awarded Bronze Standard recognition by the International Osteoporosis Foundation under the "Capture the Fracture" programme.
